  • Higher Payroll Costs Meet Cautious Dutch Customers
  • Higher Payroll Costs Meet Cautious Dutch Customers

Dutch wages and labour costs are rising faster than prices. Small businesses should check whether margin and cash can cover the next payroll dates.

Dutch wages and contractual labour costs are rising faster than consumer prices. Household spending is growing, but confidence remains weak. Small businesses face higher fixed payroll costs while customers choose more carefully on price, timing and extras.

    Why this matters

In July 2026, consumer prices were 3.1% higher than a year earlier. In June, collectively agreed hourly wages rose 4.2%, and contractual labour costs rose 4.1%. Household consumption grew in the second quarter, but consumer confidence stayed strongly negative in July. Payroll, pension contributions, tax and employer premiums have fixed dates. Customer payments do not. Rising turnover can still leave too little cash for payroll.

    Example

A repair shop can have a full diary while customers approve only essential work. They remove optional parts, ask for discounts or postpone a replacement. Booked hours may still look healthy. The average invoice may not. Wages, holiday pay, pension costs and employer premiums remain due in full. The owner needs to track labour cost per productive hour, average invoice value, overdue invoices and available cash.

    XTROVERSO tips

    • Calculate the full cost of each productive hour. Include gross wages, holiday pay, pension, employer premiums, absence cover, overtime and training. Compare the total with revenue per productive hour.
    • Put the next three payroll dates in the cash plan. Use expected bank receipts, not booked sales. Mark overdue invoices, supplier payments, tax dates and any planned wage increase.
    • Check margin by service or contract. Find work that no longer covers direct labour and supplier costs. Review the price, scope and contract terms before the next payroll change.
    • Watch what customers remove. Track quotation acceptance, discounts, average invoice value and optional work. A full order book can still contain lower-value sales.
    • Record every payroll commitment. Check the applicable collective labour agreement, wage tables and effective dates. Add individual pay promises and contract-related premiums to the file.
