  • Dutch Consumers Spend More, but Demand Remains Uneven

Dutch consumers are less pessimistic, but demand remains selective. Businesses need to check whether extra orders also improve margin and cash.
    July 30, 2026 by
    Paolo Maria Pavan

Dutch consumer confidence rose from -39 in June to -35 in July 2026. It remains well below the long-term average of -11. Household spending grew 1.8% year on year in May, but demand was uneven. Durable-goods consumption rose 6.4%, while services grew 0.3%.

    Why this matters

Customers may be more ready to consider a purchase, but price and timing still matter. Retailers may see more orders for clothing, furniture and other durable goods. Hospitality, recreation and culture still face weaker spending. Extra turnover helps only if margin remains after discounts, delivery, returns and labour. Cash must arrive before supplier invoices, payroll, rent and tax payments fall due.

    Example

A furniture shop gets more enquiries and sells more sofas. Many sales need a promotion and free delivery. The supplier must be paid before every customer payment arrives. Turnover rises, but cash remains tight. Before placing a larger autumn order, the owner checks conversion, gross margin, stock age and cash available.

    XTROVERSO tips

    • Separate interest from orders. Track enquiries, quotes, bookings and completed sales. More interest does not always result in more invoices.
    • Check margin by product or service. Include discounts, delivery, returns, payment fees and staff time. Turnover can hide a weak sale.
    • Match stock to confirmed demand. Review sell-through, stock age and supplier lead times before increasing an order. Keep cash available for VAT, payroll and rent.
    • Measure service demand carefully. Compare bookings with cancellations, average customer spend and labour hours. Do not add permanent staff after one busy period.
    • Watch when cash arrives. Review deposits, overdue invoices and payment terms. Put expected receipts beside supplier, payroll and tax dates.
