  • Dutch Firms Sell More but Hold Back on Investment

Dutch production and sales are improving, but firms remain careful about machinery, buildings and other long-term commitments.
    July 23, 2026 by
    Paolo Maria Pavan

Investment in Dutch tangible fixed assets was 3.8% lower in May 2026 than a year earlier. It had fallen 3.3% in April. Spending on buildings, infrastructure and machinery declined. Production, exports and household consumption rose. May's preliminary figure had two fewer working days.

    Why this matters

More orders do not put cash in place for a machine or energy project. Deposits, VAT, installation and lost production can fall due before extra sales arrive. Industrial firms expect 2026 investment to be 3% below 2025. An owner may keep machines and premises in service longer. That preserves cash, but can bring repair bills, delivery delays and tighter capacity.

    Example

A manufacturer has more orders and a quotation for a new machine. The supplier shows lower unit costs and a monthly finance payment. Its cash forecast includes the deposit, VAT and several days without production. Staff training and extra stock also need funding. Customer invoices may arrive late. The purchase works only if cash and margin cover those costs in a weaker sales month.

    XTROVERSO tips

    • Separate replacement from expansion. For each asset, record its purpose: replacement, compliance, energy savings or extra capacity. Name the machine, premises work or vehicle. Record why it is needed.
    • Build a monthly cash case. Include the deposit, VAT, finance payments, installation, downtime, training, maintenance and extra stock. Do not rely only on annual profit.
    • Test weaker sales. Run the forecast with slower orders, lower margin and later customer payments. Check the lowest cash point.
    • Check outside dependencies. Confirm landlord consent, permits, contractor dates, insurance and grid capacity before signing a contract.
    • Price the cost of waiting. Record repair bills, energy waste, missed output and delayed deliveries. Postponement can consume cash without creating a purchase invoice.
    • Assign an owner. Name the person responsible for the contract, invoices, asset record, installation, insurance and performance check.
