  • Fewer Dutch Bankruptcies, but Cash Pressure Remains
  • Fewer Dutch Bankruptcies, but Cash Pressure Remains

Dutch bankruptcies fell in July 2026. Businesses still need to watch margins, invoices and short-term cash, especially in pressured sectors.
    August 14, 2026 by
    Paolo Maria Pavan

Dutch business bankruptcies fell to 266 in July 2026. That was 33 fewer than a year earlier and 36 fewer than in June. The adjusted rate was 7.1 per 100,000 businesses. Industry, transport and hospitality had the highest sector rates. Construction rose slightly year on year.

    Why this matters

Bankruptcy is a late signal. Trouble often starts with late invoices, thin margins, rising costs or stock that will not sell. Demand improved in several parts of the economy, and business confidence rose from its spring low. Inflation reached 3.2 percent in July. Motor fuels cost 22.0 percent more than a year earlier. A fuller order book can still drain cash when contract prices and payment terms do not cover current costs.

    Example

A transport firm considers buying another vehicle because its routes are busy. Before signing the finance contract, the owner calculates the margin on every route. Fuel, payroll, maintenance and interest must fit the customer rate. The owner also checks the first invoice date. If a large customer pays late, payroll, tax and supplier bills still fall due. Extra work helps only when cash arrives in time.

    XTROVERSO tips

    • Compare sales with cash received. Review the past three months. Flag customers, projects or routes where sales rose but cash receipts did not.
    • Check margin at working level. Calculate gross margin by customer, contract, product or route. Include current fuel, energy, staff and supplier costs.
    • Review every overdue invoice. Separate disputes, payment promises and invoices without follow-up. Give each file an owner and a next action.
    • Build an eight-week cash view. List expected receipts beside payroll, VAT, rent, finance payments and key suppliers. Use realistic payment dates.
    • Apply contract price clauses. Check indexation, surcharge and price-review terms. Ensure approved changes appear on the invoice and in the accounting record.
