  • Higher Factory Prices Put Small Supplier Margins at Risk
  • Higher Factory Prices Put Small Supplier Margins at Risk

Oil-linked factory prices remain higher than last year. Small suppliers should connect new costs to quotes, contracts, customer terms and cash timing.
    July 31, 2026 by
    Paolo Maria Pavan

Dutch industrial selling prices were 4.4% higher in June 2026 than a year earlier. Oil-linked branches led the rise, including petroleum, chemicals, plastics and metal products. Prices fell 1.1% from May, yet many suppliers still pay more than last year.

    Why this matters

The headline figure will not settle an order’s margin. Check the purchase invoice, quote date, contract, stock and payment dates. Material may be due in 30 days, while customer payment arrives 60 days after delivery. A fixed customer price leaves the business funding the gap. A customer with a weak order book may reject an increase. Base the decision on your own order and payment records.

    Example

A small manufacturer receives a higher invoice for chemical coating and a transport surcharge. The customer’s order uses a quote issued three months ago. Delivery is due next week, and the contract has no price-adjustment clause. The owner checks the order margin, the customer’s payment record and the cost of carrying the gap. The price may stay unchanged to protect the account. Record that choice and its cost.

    XTROVERSO tips

    • Match costs to open work. Link changed material, fuel and transport costs to open quotes, orders and projects that have not been invoiced.
    • Check the contract file. Review quote validity, fixed-price terms, indexation clauses and approval limits. Get legal advice if contract wording is unclear.
    • Use your own evidence. Keep the supplier invoice, transport charge, material specification and original quote in one file. They support a clear customer discussion.
    • Calculate the cash effect. Compare supplier payment terms with customer payment terms. A higher sales price can still strain cash when the customer pays later.
    • Review customer risk. Check aged debtors, disputed invoices and credit limits before offering longer terms or accepting delayed payment.
    • Use one shared calendar. Record quote expiry dates, supplier changes, contract reviews and major invoice dates in one planning file for sales, purchasing and finance.
