  • Dutch Retail Sales Rise, but What Remains for Shops?
  • Dutch Retail Sales Rise, but What Remains for Shops?

Dutch retailers sold more goods in June 2026, but higher turnover did not guarantee better margins or stronger cash flow.
    August 3, 2026 by
    Paolo Maria Pavan

Dutch retail turnover, excluding petrol stations, rose 2.9% in June 2026 from a year earlier. Sales volume increased 2.5%, meaning more goods were sold. Online turnover grew 7.5%. Results differed by branch.

    Why this matters

The national figure will not match every shop. Consumer electronics and white goods rose 6.3%, while shoes and leather goods fell 4.6%. For a shop owner, selling older stock at a sound margin can release cash. New supplier orders can tie it up before earlier stock is paid for. Online orders add payment fees, packaging, delivery, customer service, and returns. Contractual labour costs were 4.1% higher. Check margin, stock age, returns, cash collected, and contribution per paid hour.

    Example

A €90 product sells at the counter and through a webshop. Each sale adds €90 to turnover. The shop customer takes the item away. The online order needs payment processing, packaging, delivery, and perhaps a refund. If those costs sit in general overhead, the webshop result can look better than it is.

    XTROVERSO tips

    • Split shop and online results. Track turnover, gross margin, payment fees, delivery, returns, and cash received separately for each channel.
    • Check stock age before reordering. List old stock, open supplier orders, and planned discounts. Slow stock can absorb cash from a stronger sales month.
    • Measure contribution per paid hour. Compare gross contribution with payroll during busy and quiet periods. Use the result when setting opening hours and fulfilment shifts.
    • Review categories, not the national average. Compare sales volume, margin, stock value, and markdowns by product category. Your category may fall while total retail sales rise.
    • Reconcile webshop records. Match orders, refunds, payment-provider settlements, delivery charges, and stock movements to the ledger each week.
