  • No Tax Letter Can Still Mean a Dutch Tax Bill

Dutch income tax may still be due when no filing letter arrives. Check taxable facts, submission proof and cash exposure for every open year.

Dutch taxpayers may still need to file an income tax return without a filing letter. If the return shows tax due above that year’s assessment threshold, the filing duty may remain. An open year can later bring an assessment, interest and pressure on current cash.

    Why this matters

No letter does not close the tax file. Income, property, residence and owner transactions can affect the return. For an owner-manager, BV accounts and the personal return are separate files. Salary, dividends, shareholder loans and private property may belong in the personal return. A late assessment uses today’s cash. It can affect payroll, supplier payments, dividends or planned investment.

    Example

An owner-manager closes the BV accounts and receives no personal tax letter. The adviser prepares the figures, but nobody confirms whether a personal return is required or sent. The owner uses the available cash for a renovation. Two years later, the missing return is found. Records must be collected again, and the tax payment competes with other bills. The gap was the unchecked filing status.

    XTROVERSO tips

    • Map the tax facts for each year. List salary, dividends, shareholder loans, property, foreign income and residence changes. Keep the list with the company accounts and personal tax file.
    • Check the actual filing status. Record whether each return was required, prepared, approved, submitted, assessed and paid. A prepared return has not necessarily been sent.
    • Keep proof of submission. Save the final return and transmission confirmation for each tax year. Store assessments, payment records and relevant correspondence in the same file.
    • Review adviser handovers. Confirm which adviser is handling every open year. A filing extension or an adviser schedule is not confirmation that the return was sent.
    • Protect current cash. Show assessed tax, expected tax and unresolved older years separately in the cash forecast. Check the applicable threshold and deadline for each year.
