  • Dutch Customers Are Buying, but Margins Stay Tight
  • Dutch Customers Are Buying, but Margins Stay Tight

Dutch consumers remain cautious while spending continues unevenly. Small businesses need to test every sale against margin, costs and cash received.
    August 21, 2026 by
    Paolo Maria Pavan

Dutch consumer confidence rose from -35 in July to -34 in August 2026. It remains far below its twenty-year average of -12. Willingness to buy stayed at -19. Household consumption and retail sales volume grew in June, although results differed by product group. Customers are still spending carefully.

    Why this matters

Higher sales can still leave less cash. A customer may expect a discount, free delivery or a smaller package. Inflation reached 3.2% in July. Agreed hourly wages and contractual hourly labour costs were 4.2% higher in the second quarter than a year earlier. Check what remains after stock, payroll, delivery, returns, VAT and customer acquisition. Keep shop sales, online orders and service work separate. Margins and payment cycles differ.

    Example

A retailer matches a lower washing-machine price. Delivery, installation and removal of the old machine are included. The invoice total looks sound, but those jobs consume much of the margin. That order earns its place only when it covers every attached cost and still leaves cash. Hidden costs in monthly turnover can make a busy week look better than it was.

    XTROVERSO tips

    • Check margin by sale. Calculate revenue after purchase cost, discount, delivery, labour, returns and payment fees. Review the result by product or service line.
    • Record how each order was won. Mark sales that needed a promotion, bundle, free service or longer payment term. Your records show whether customers accept the normal offer.
    • Watch stock and open orders. List slow-moving stock, cancellations and delayed orders. Cash tied up in unsold goods cannot pay payroll, tax or supplier invoices.
    • Compare channels. Keep shop, online and service revenue apart. Add advertising, fulfilment, returns and travel costs to each channel.
    • Ask staff what customers resist. Collect repeated objections about price, timing and value. Check these records before changing prices or starting a broad promotion.
