  • AI Changes the Job Before It Cuts Payroll

AI is spreading through Dutch small-business work. Clear data limits, staff guidance, review steps and measurable results help employers keep control.

    Linda Pavan

AI use is rising among Dutch microbusinesses, especially in marketing, sales, administration and management. The first change is in daily tasks, staff skills and review work. Payroll savings remain uncertain because faster work still needs checking and a person responsible for the result.

    Why this matters

In 2025, 13.8 percent of Dutch microbusinesses used at least one measured AI technology. The figure was 10.6 percent in 2024 and 6.8 percent in 2023. About half of employers expect changed training and skills needs. Only around 60 percent of AI-using employers report guiding staff. Customer data, CVs, prices and payroll records can enter an external tool. Savings count only when faster work improves invoicing, customer output or correction rates.

    Example

A staff member uses a chatbot to draft a customer reply. It saves ten minutes but includes a delivery promise missing from the contract. The customer treats the message as confirmation. A named person needs to check the contract, approve the promise and own the reply sent. Without that check, a quick draft can cause rework, lost margin or delayed payment.

    XTROVERSO tips

    • List the tools already in use. Include free chatbots and personal accounts. Record who uses each tool and which work they use it for.
    • Map the work, not the software. Check customer replies, recruitment, planning, file summaries, invoice support and management reports. Mark where AI enters the process.
    • Set information limits. Tell staff whether names, CVs, prices, payroll details, contracts and customer records may be entered into each tool.
    • Name the final reviewer. Assign someone to check facts, calculations, terms and employment decisions. Keep that responsibility visible in the relevant file.
    • Measure a business result. Track invoice speed, correction rates, response time or completed customer work. Compare the result with the tool fee and staff time.
    • Keep a learning route for staff. During review, ask what the employee checked, what looked wrong and why the answer was approved. Junior staff still need practice spotting exceptions.
