The child-related budget is a financial scheme from the Dutch government that provides support to parents to help cover the costs of raising children. This monthly allowance is offered on top of the regular child benefits, known as kinderbijslag (SVB), and is managed by the Tax Administration (Belastingdienst). It is particularly aimed at families with low or middle incomes, offering a much-needed financial boost.

Why does the child-related budget exist?

Raising children comes with many expenses, from school supplies to clothing and extracurricular activities. The child-related budget is intended to reduce the financial strain on parents, making it a bit easier to provide for their children. For families with lower incomes, this extra support can be a game-changer in meeting everyday needs.

Who qualifies for the child-related budget?

To be eligible for this benefit, you must meet certain criteria. First, you need to have at least one child under the age of 18, for whom you are receiving child benefits (kinderbijslag). Additionally, your combined income and assets must fall below specific thresholds. The allowance is only available to individuals with Dutch nationality or a valid residence permit. These conditions ensure that the benefit reaches families who need it the most.

    How much can you receive?

The amount you receive depends on factors such as your family size, the ages of your children, your household income, and whether you are a single parent. For 2025, the maximum annual amount is €2,511 for the first child. Additional amounts are available for older children, with a €703 supplement for children aged 12 to 16 and €936 for children aged 16 to 18. Single parents can receive up to €3,480 extra per year. These amounts can provide significant relief, especially for families with older children or single-income households.

    How to apply

In many cases, there is no need to apply for the child-related budget. If you are already receiving other allowances such as healthcare or housing benefits, the Tax Administration will automatically notify you if you qualify for the child-related budget. However, if you believe you meet the eligibility criteria but have not been contacted, you can submit an application through the Tax Administration’s website.

    Special situations

Certain situations may affect your eligibility or how the benefit is paid. For example, in cases of co-parenting, only one parent can receive the child-related budget. This is typically the parent who is already receiving the kinderbijslag. Additionally, even if you are no longer receiving child benefits for a child aged 16 or 17, you may still qualify for the child-related budget under specific conditions.

It is essential to notify the Tax Administration of any changes in your income, assets, or family situation to avoid receiving an incorrect amount, which could lead to repayment later.
