When Your Payment Doesn’t Go Through

What a new anti-money laundering rule quietly changes for your cash flow

  • When Your Payment Doesn’t Go Through
  • March 20, 2026 by

From July 1, 2026, your money can pause mid-flight. Not from a bank or technical error, but because FIU-Nederland asked your bank to hold it.

The change comes from new powers under the Wwft, the Dutch anti-money laundering law. FIU-Nederland can now ask banks and payment providers to halt transactions when there are strong signs of fraud, money laundering, or terrorist financing.

The pause lasts up to five working days. If the request comes from a foreign FIU, it can be extended to 10.

This may seem removed from everyday business, but it is not.

What This Looks Like in Practice

FIU-Nederland will not call you. You will simply see money not arrive or a payment not leave your account.

Your bank is required to inform you that the transaction has been paused. But that notification does not explain why or tell you when the hold will lift. You just know your cash flow is temporarily stuck.

Send a large payment to a new supplier abroad. Everything appears correct. The payment does not go through. Days later, you learn the transaction was temporarily blocked. You did nothing wrong. A trigger flagged it. The issue has been resolved, but your delivery is late; your client is waiting, and your plans are delayed by a week.

No drama, just a potential delay in your process.

Why This Matters for Small Businesses

Money moves fast today. Many transactions in the Netherlands now take place in near real time via instant payments. That speed makes it harder for authorities to intervene once something suspicious happens. By slowing things down briefly, they create a window to investigate before funds disappear.

For the system as a whole, that makes sense. For the entrepreneur, it introduces timing risk.

Extra cash flow buffers matter more now, not for disasters, but for small delays. Pay closer attention to payment terms with new or international partners. Stay calm, check, document, and follow up when something unusual happens.

These pauses are designed to be temporary and proportionate. FIU-Nederland will only order a postponement if there are strong indications of money laundering, underlying offenses, or terrorist financing. A proportionate approach is always the starting point.

    What You Should Do Now

Add a buffer of a few extra days to your cash flow planning so you can manage any temporary transaction holds without urgent disruption.

Review the payment terms you set with new suppliers and international partners. Clearly identify when money must be received and when it must actually move.

If a transaction gets paused, document everything. Keep records of the transaction details, your bank's notification, and any subsequent communication. This is not about proving innocence. It is about keeping clarity when timing shifts unexpectedly.

Recognize the pattern. Not all delay is an error. Sometimes, it is the system doing exactly what it is built to do. The financial system is becoming less immediate when something does not fully add up.

That changes how you plan. A little more margin in timing. A little more clarity in transactions. A little more awareness of who you are doing business with. Nothing excessive. Just enough to keep your operations steady, even when money stands still for a few days.
