Higher Rent Limits for 2025

One of the key updates for 2025 is the increase in maximum rent limits, allowing more renters to qualify for housing allowance. The general rent limit has been raised to €900.07, up from €879.66 in 2024. This change accommodates renters whose housing costs have risen, ensuring that they can still access financial support.

For renters under 21, the rent limit has been increased to €477.20. While the allowance is only calculated on the portion of rent up to this threshold, this update means more young renters living independently are now eligible for support.

Adjusted Asset Limits

The program’s asset limits have also been slightly increased for 2025. Individual renters can now have up to €37.395 in assets, while the combined limit for partners is set at €74.790. This adjustment allows renters with modest savings to remain eligible for housing allowance, offering greater flexibility without compromising access to support.

How to Apply for Housing Allowance in 2025

Applying for housing allowance is a simple process. You can submit your application online via Mijn Toeslagen using your DigiD credentials. Once approved, the allowance is automatically renewed each year as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements.

If you realize later that you were eligible for housing allowance, you can submit a retroactive application for 2025 up until September 1, 2026. This ensures that no eligible renter misses out on this valuable financial support.

Eligibility Requirements for Housing Allowance

To qualify for housing allowance, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You rent an independent residence with its own entrance, kitchen, and bathroom.
  • Your income and assets fall below the specified limits for your household situation.

What These Changes Mean for Renters

The 2025 updates to the housing allowance program are designed to address the challenges of rising rental costs and ensure that financial support remains accessible to those who need it most. By increasing rent and asset limits, the program extends its reach to more renters, helping them cover their housing costs and reducing financial stress.
